iCloud sync

Syncing your journal needs Hamdam Plus. Your settings coming back after a reinstall does not: that works on the free tier too, on a device signed in to iCloud.

With Hamdam Plus and sync on, your journal, favourites, letters to your future self and Garden habits move between your own Apple devices through Apple's private database, scoped to your Apple ID.

Separately, and for everyone, Hamdam keeps your settings in your iCloud account. Delete the app and put it back, or start on a new device, and your name, your home country and the switches you set come back with it.

There is no Hamdam server in this. That is the good part and the hard part: nobody at Hamdam can see your journal, and nobody at Hamdam can recover it for you either.

Step by step

  1. Open Your Hamdam.

  2. Tap Sync.

  3. Sync with iCloud is on by default once you have Hamdam Plus, and starts the next time Hamdam opens. Use this switch to turn it off or back on.

  4. Make sure the device is signed in to iCloud. The switch cannot be turned on while it is not.

  5. Once sync is on, the card shows whether it is waiting, syncing, or when it last synced.

  6. Your settings, further down the same screen, says whether this install had settings restored from iCloud, and what a reinstall does not bring back.

Worth knowing

  • Without Hamdam Plus your journal is not synced. It lives on this device, apart from a copy of your ten most recent reflections kept in your own iCloud so your Apple Watch can show them. Deleting the app deletes the journal, and a reinstall does not bring it back.
  • What comes back after a reinstall: your name, where you were born and where you live, how Hamdam addresses you, your reading face and size, the sky and whether it moves, the opening sound and the breath sounds, whether Learn my rhythm is on, your Garden reminders and family message alerts, the Garden coaches' times and goals, and switches such as Deep Mode and system search.
  • What does not: your app language, which you choose again under Your Hamdam, then About You; your Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Cultural moments reminders, which you set again; and Apple Health, calendar and Apple Music access, because a permission belongs to the device that granted it, so Hamdam asks again. Nor does the sync switch itself, or the selfie on your profile, which stays on the device it was taken on.
  • A restore only fills in what a new install has never set. A choice you have already made on this device always wins.
  • On the first launch after a reinstall, your journal history can take a little while to arrive. It appears on its own once iCloud has answered.
  • A family you share or join is kept differently: it lives in the iCloud account of the person who started it. That is covered under Your family, from their own iCloud.
  • If you delete your iCloud data or sign out of iCloud, the synced Hamdam data goes with it.
