The cultural calendar and its moments

Roots opens on a calendar and carries a set of cultural moments. What appears depends on the heritage and home country you gave when you set Hamdam up, which is why those questions were asked.

A moment in Hamdam is never only a date. Yalda and Anzac Day are, underneath, both about carrying grief together through the dark, and Hamdam reaches for that rather than for a fact sheet.

The calendar is free, with no limits: the month box, the day, week, month and year views, search and your own events, and, with Hamdam set to Farsi, the whole Persian calendar with Iran's public holidays and named days. From 2.1 a poet's day opens that poet's page, which follows the poets' own plan: Hafez and Rumi are free, the others are Hamdam Plus.

Step by step

  1. Open Roots. The calendar is the box at the top, with this month in it and arrows to step back and forward.

The calendar box at the top of Roots in English: October 2026 as a Gregorian month, today circled, small dots on the days with a reflection, and Calendar at the foot.
  2. In English the grid is Gregorian. In Farsi it is the Iranian solar calendar, with Persian numerals and a week that starts on Saturday.

  3. Reading in Farsi, Iranian cultural moments and public holidays are marked on the grid. In either language, a day you wrote on carries a small dot.

  4. Tap Calendar at the foot of the box for the full calendar: day, week, month and year, with search and new events.

  5. In the full calendar, tap today or a later day to add a reflection block to your own calendar.

  6. Reading in Farsi, tapping an Iranian cultural moment in the month view also offers a reminder the day before.

  7. Back on Roots, under your family, Where you come from shows the next moment from your heritage, with its countdown.

  8. Tap that moment to open it: its meaning, and a short list of what Hamdam can do for that day, such as writing a reflection, recording an elder or adding someone to your family. Each one takes you there.

  9. Below it, Hamdam lists the public holidays where you live, whichever language you read in.

  10. To change which moments you see, open Your Hamdam, then About You, and edit heritage or home region.

Worth knowing

  • Writing to your calendar needs Hamdam to have calendar access. If it has not, the reflection block and the reminder are not added.
  • In the full calendar, pressing and holding a day adds a reflection block straight away.
  • If you were born somewhere other than where you live, a small strip under the moment shows what is happening where you come from.
